Birmingham-Southern, Chattahoochee Valley partner to smooth transition for transfers

For Immediate Release
May. 7, 2019

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Birmingham-Southern College and Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) have signed an agreement that will expedite the completion of a bachelor’s degree at BSC for Chattahoochee Valley students starting in the fall.

The two institutions have signed an articulation agreement ensuring that students who have earned associate’s degrees at CVCC can seamlessly continue their education at BSC. The contract establishes that those who have earned an associate’s degree in arts and sciences will have fulfilled Birmingham-Southern’s general education requirements with the exception of a class in writing reinforcement and a capstone course.

“We look forward to partnering with Chattahoochee Valley Community College and are excited to have their graduates join Birmingham-Southern College,” said BSC President Daniel B. Coleman. “This agreement will make the transfer process more efficient and transparent so CVCC students can continue their studies at BSC completing their bachelors’ degree in our personalized academic environment on the schedule they set for themselves.”

Statistics show that as many as half of all college students complete at least some of their academic work at two-year colleges. Articulation agreements outline the course requirements for degree work and how credits will transfer.

“This agreement gives CVCC students yet another opportunity to transfer seamlessly to a four-year college in the state of Alabama,” said CVCC President Jackie Screws. “BSC is recognized as one of the finest colleges in the country. It is similar in size to CVCC and their academic offerings align well with ours. These reasons are at the core of our belief that this partnership will be a good fit and will greatly benefit our students.”

In recent years, BSC has completed similar agreements with other Alabama two-year institutions, including Bevill State Community College, Jefferson State Community College, Lawson State Community College, Wallace State Community College, Calhoun Community College, Northeast Alabama Community College, and Snead State Community College. Those agreements, plus the college’s decision to reset tuition and mandatory fees to $17,650 starting this academic year, should make BSC more accessible to a diverse group of students.
